June Wildlife Tour
One of the perks of being a lodge manager is the occasional 'FAM' tour that you get invited on. Our new home in Alert Bay up in the Vancouver Island North area offers the attraction of wildlife and it is abundant. Really you do not have to leave the island to see the seals, sea otters, sea lions, eagles and whales as they cruise by regularly especially come July and August. Yesterday, however, we had the chance to get out on the ocean and see what was out there. We were invited out by Stubbs Island Whale Watching, they gave us the full VIP treatment picking us up at the Alert Bay Wharf in the water taxi and taking us to Telegraph Cove where the whale watching goes from. A cute little resort with a lot of history we did not have nearly enough time to check it out. I would recommend ensuring that you have at least an hour to two hours to check out all the history, poke around and then explore the Whale Interpretive Center. Telegraph Cove is a great place to stop in even if you are not off on a tour, rich in history, one of the best restaurants on the North Island (we were told) and a challenging hiking trail out to the point, stop in if you are driving by!
