Why Alert Bay?

Kathleen and Marvin: thank you for your hospitality during my fantastic stay here in Alert Bay and for arranging my memorable whale watching and grizzly bear watching trips. Many people asked me “why Alert Bay”? I could only respond that it had a certain charming appeal, a good location by Vancouver Island and well, you have a good website!

A Few Guest Comments from July

A thoroughly enjoyable stay, comfortable accommodations, delicious breakfast and great company! The views from the lounge window are fantastic! The family thoroughly enjoyed the whale watching tour on the “Sea Otter”. We followed a pod of orcas, one orca decided to say “hello” and swam under our boat twice! We also saw a minke whale feeding, seals, porpoises and bald eagles! Overall a wonderful experience!

Artist Retreat

Alert Bay Lodge is thrilled to participate in the Alert Bay Art Group’s inaugural workshop. “Textures of Village Island” includes an all day field trip to Village Island on Saturday, April 4 where we’ll wander and sketch among the ruins of this historic First Nations island. We’ll spend the next day under the tutelage of Pat Warrington, a visiting UK artist and part-time resident of Alert Bay. On this day, and set in the Great Room of Alert Bay Lodge, we’ll create our finished pieces from our sketches. The workshop’s limit of 10 participants filled up in a day! But, more are planned, so please keep in touch with us at reservations@alertbaylodge.com

Easter April 2-5

Hi Kathie and Marvin,

Scott and I are really looking forward to coming up to Alert Bay for Easter. I love having breakfast with the Easter Bunny and meeting all the locals. Last year my mum and I also attended a service at the historic Anglican Church, and later we were invited by the locals for tea and cookies. By the end of the day we felt like one of the gang. People really do make the place! We have told so many people about our wonderful time last year I think we'll have a few more people coming up with us this year. Especially with the new renovations - heated floors and soaker tubs!

More about The Alert Bay 360

As I said in my last post The Alert Bay 360 is on July 24th starting at 11:00 am. What I didn't tell you was that there are already hundreds of people coming! The campground is getting a face lift and already 70 tenters are planning to stay there. Thismeans if you want to be a part of all the excitement, you should make your accommodation plans early! The Alert Bay Sea Festival will be held that same weekend, so there will be lots to see and do.

Exciting News

We have received information today that The Alert Bay 360 will be held on Saturday, July 24. If you were in Alert Bay last summer you know that The Alert Bay 360 is a kayak race around Cormorant Island. Last year this was accomplished in less than an hour. A racing kayak built by Atlantis Kayaks is pledged as a prize, value is 4K. Don't miss your chance to win one of many prizes. Last year it was exciting to watch the race from the Lodge windows.

Spring is coming

Spring is coming to Alert Bay. No, we don't have daffodils or tulips, we do have little purple hyacinths, purple, yellow and white crocuses and there are 4 buds on the rose tree. People down Island have their daffodils trying to bud, but haven't heard of anyone with roses yet! Yeah Alert Bay!

Another sunny day in Alert Bay

It's 1:30 in the afternoon; a gorgeous day in Alert Bay. The weather is warm, there is no wind. Hundreds of ducks are swimming in the water, ducking beneath the surface for their lunch. It is interesting to see how long they can hold their breath!

The sun has gone down

Another beautiful day. It was a morning with no wind, bright sunshine, blue skies and birds swimming on the water. In the afternoon, there was a mist of rain for a short while, then a full rainbow appeared. Alert Bay - a great place to be.

A great day in Alert Bay! The sun came out for awhile; 9C and calm seas. The wind has gone, it is quiet but for the eagles calling from the trees behind the Lodge.

It is a balmy 9 C here in Alert Bay! The winds are still gusting at 45 knots but the wind is expected to drop by this evening. A gorgeous sunrise this morning!

Evening at Alert Bay Lodge

Another wintery day in Alert Bay! The temperature was around 5 C and the sky was cloudy with intermittent showers all day. The sky is still overcast this evening, so we probably won't get to see the moon shining down on Johnstone Strait.
